Can a Ring Doorbell Be Connected to More Than One Phone?

Ring Doorbells are an interesting and useful product, and something many people say they want to have in a home one day, if they don’t already have it. However, when there may be multiple people living there, a common question people ask is if a Ring Doorbell can be connected to more than one phone.

Yes a Ring Doorbell can be connected to more than one phone! You can connect to multiple phones either by sharing access from a single account to other people, or by having multiple users log into a single account from different phones. And it is more simple than you might think!

This article will explain how this works and how to set it up so that you can access your Ring Doorbell from multiple phones or devices, according to your own personal preferences. (You might also be interested in our related article “Best Inexpensive Alternatives to the Ring Video Doorbell“.)

The Ring Doorbell Shared User Feature

When access is shared, the person can view videos and respond to rings, but not delete videos.

Set this up by opening up the Ring app on yours or whoever’s phone is the one that has it. Then, once in the app, tap on the Ring Doorbell icon in the top-left corner on the screen. You’ll then click on “shared users” and select “add user”.

You will then be asked to type in the email address of the person you are trying to add. Do that and then click “OK”. Their email address will then appear in the list under “shared users” and it will say “pending invite” below.

The Shared User feature connects another phone to Ring Doorbell through their email address.

The person you are sharing with will then get an email invite, which has a link. Once they click on the link, they’ll be brought to a screen where they will be asked to create a Ring account, and they can type in their email and create a password, clicking “next” after doing so to move on.

Once that is done, they can close out of that, and install the Ring app on their own phone. They’ll open it up once downloaded and select “log in” and enter the credentials that they made for themselves.

After they’ve done all of this, they will be able to have access to the Ring Doorbell that you shared with them.

This access enables the person you shared with to do the following:

  • Receive and answer alerts when someone presses the doorbell or triggers the motion sensors.
  • Turn on and off alerts for their devices that have the app and are logged into it.
  • View videos that have been stored.
  • Save videos directly to their own phone or device.
  • Join a three-way call in response to an alert.
  • Initiate and use Ring Plus functionality.

There are some things the person you shared with will still not be able to do, however. Those things are as follows:

  • Delete videos that are stored in recent activity.
  • Delete devices.
  • Change motion settings.
  • Change the device name.
  • Share to any additional users.

You are able to share with as many other people or devices as you want, which is a nice plus. It’s a good feature, especially if you have multiple devices in addition to multiple people living in your home.

This may be a good option if you have older children at home with you so that they can get alerts and some limited access without the ability to make changes or delete videos.

Logging Into a Single Ring Doorbell Account

When someone logs into a single account, even from multiple phones, they have all access to every function on each phone or device.

This option is actually pretty easy to do. You simply have the other person download the Ring app from their phone or device and log in with your own login credentials.

They will then be able to do everything that you are able to do, including deleting videos, changing names and settings, and sharing to other users.

This option is a bit like sharing your Netflix password with someone. By doing this, the person has access to all the profiles, or devices in this case, and can make changes to them. While the Ring Alarm system requires a pin and has more structure for some things, the Ring Doorbell is not like that.

Giving someone your login info means they can do whatever they feel the need or desire to do with the doorbell on their app.

This method can be a good option for people you trust and want to give more access to. However, remember that if you have multiple Ring devices besides the Ring Doorbell, they will be able to access those from the app as well and potentially make changes.

Just make sure the person you give your login info to is extremely trustworthy and will not make changes or do anything like that without first talking it over with you.

What Devices Can Work With the Ring Doorbell and App?

Connecting to multiple phones is a great option because phones are portable and almost always with someone. There are other devices that a Ring Doorbell can be connected to, though.

Phones

Phones are the main thing mentioned in this article but in a general sense. What phones specifically can connect to the Ring Doorbell?

Well, any phone that has the app in their app store can connect to the Ring Doorbell. This means any Apple IPhone, Google Android Phone, Samsung Galaxy Phone, Microsoft Phone, or another type of smartphone with access to apps can download this. Phones that are older and are not smartphones will not be able to access the app and therefore the Ring Doorbell.

Both Apple and Android phones are compatible with Ring Doorbell, and can share with one another.

If members of your family or friends that you are sharing with have different types of smartphones, as long as they can access the app, then they will be fine.

So if you are a die-hard Apple user, and your spouse or child likes to use Android products, it won’t make a difference, and you’ll all be able to use it in the same way.

Tablets

The same principle that applies to phones also applies to tablets. If you can get the app on your tablet, then you can access the Ring Doorbell from it.

Any Apple Ipad, Google Table, Samsung Galaxy Tablet or other tablets with an app store will work. This is a nice option for people who like to use their tablets at home and may not have their phones nearby at all times.

Tablets are also nice because videos will typically display larger due to the bigger screen.

Some tablets may not have all the functionality of phones, however, such as microphones, depending on its age and generation, so that is a potential drawback to using tablets.

However, since you can add to multiple devices, then it should not be too big of an issue, as you can add the Ring app to the tablet and still use your phone if you need it.

Smart TVs

Some Smart TVs can connect with some Ring Doorbells. The Amazon Fire TV connects with Ring Doorbell devices after the original, as the original version is not compatible with any Smart TV device. Google Smart TVs with Chrome-casts are also able to connect with Ring Doorbells, besides the original version.

Samsung Smart TVs are also compatible with the Ring Doorbell Pro, but not with any other Ring Doorbell. Other Smart TVs with that can download the Ring app will likely be able to connect to and work with the Ring Doorbell.

My home has several TVs, some upstairs and some in the basement. With a TV connected to the Ring Doorbell, it would make it a lot easier to see what’s going on and if I need to interrupt my show or not, all from a comfy position on the upstairs or downstairs couches.

This is a great feature that can make life much easier.

Alexa

The Ring Doorbell is compatible with some Alexa devices, but not all of them. The devices it can connect to are Echo Show, Alexa Spot, and Alexa Smart TVs like Alexa Fire TV. This is because those devices have video capability, while devices like the Echo and Dot are audio only.

To connect these, you simply enable the “Ring Video Doorbell” skill on your Amazon Alexa device through the Amazon Alexa app and login with your Ring account login credentials.

Alexa may then ask you to discover the devices, and you can select yes, and it should be able to find it so you can connect.

Alexa can help you monitor your home through Ring Doorbell.

If it doesn’t ask to discover devices, just go back to the Alexa home screen on the app and click on “smart home” in the menu. Once there, click “+ Add Device” if your doorbell didn’t show up. It should show up now, and you can then add it.

After adding any Ring Doorbell to Amazon Alexa devices that are compatible, you can say, “Alexa, show me…” and say whatever the name of your Ring Doorbell device is. Then it will display on your Amazon Alexa device, and you’ll be able to see a live stream.

This is a great option for a hands-free way to see your doorbell’s feed, and for if you’re in your house without your phone or tablet on hand but still want to check on the doorbell.

You can connect to multiple Alexa devices in a home so long as they are compatible with the Ring Doorbell that you have.

Google Home and Assistant

Ring Doorbells can also connect to Google Home devices, although this is fairly new. As with Alexa, if you want to see a video of the doorbell, then you’ll have to connect it with a Google Home device that has video capability, such as a Chromecast Smart TV.

To add it, go to the Google Home app and click on “Add + Set up new device”. The setup menu will show an option, that says “Have something already set up?” and you can click on that and select your Ring Doorbell. From there, log in to your Ring account and follow the steps in order to pair the devices.

Once paired, you can do similar things as with Alexa, simply by asking your Google Assistant to talk to Ring in order to perform various tasks.

As a disclaimer, this option may be more difficult for some. Google only recently seems to have set up Ring capability with its devices, and it actually seems to work more with Nest devices.

It does claim to work with Ring devices, but some people have found that it doesn’t quite work in the way that they want it to. This may be because Google owns Nest and Amazon owns Ring, and the two are competitors of each other.

One reviewer wrote:

“Integration and use information is little to none… No video on my smart screen. No clear path to linking it to my home/assistant. No road map on making this device better on Google Home.”

-Matthew Fiores

It might be good to double check your device’s compatibility options when it comes to Google Home before committing, as this option seems to give people some problems.

However, it is likely that Google will improve in the next few months, and so there could be nothing to worry about. Technology gets better every day, so a little patience may work out in the long run.

Other Devices

Ring Doorbells can also be connected to several other devices that make up a smart home as well. Also, if you have an existing doorbell chime, it can connect to that as well.

Ring Doorbell will work with IFTTT, which is a system that stands for “if this, then that,” and it allows you to create “Applets” that will connect devices to each other.

To use it, download the IFTTT app from your app store, and create an account. Then you’ll click “My Applets” in the app and select the plus sign, allowing you to create an Applet.

IFTTT is compatible with Ring Doorbell.

You’ll then come up with a trigger for the Applet, which will activate the Applet and start another event. Then follow the instructions and select your Ring Doorbell and create Applets as you please. You may have to sign into your Ring account and link it with your IFTTT account before it fully works.

A Ring Doorbell can also work with certain security devices. It can, of course, sync with other Ring products. It is also compatible with smart lock systems from Kisi, LockState, Lockitron, and Kevo.

It is directly compatible with ADT and SmartThings, as far as home security systems and smart home options go.

It can also work with other products like Nest if used with a third-party device such as Alexa.

However many devices you have that you want to connect to your Ring Doorbell, be it a number of phones, or Alexa devices or other options, you can connect them.

There’s no limit, as long as the devices are compatible. This can be great for a home with many people and with many devices.
